Hearing Aids Basics

Realistic Expectations

Even with the most advanced hearing aids, your hearing will not return to normal. Hearing aid use and eyeglasses use can not be compared. Adjusting to hearing aids is a longer process than with eyeglasses- they are not a quick fix. It takes time for your auditory system to adjust to hearing and understanding the new sounds.

Hearing Aid Style / Size

Hearing aids come in a variety of styles. Each has advantages and disadvantages. When considering size, a number of factors come into play:

  • Severity and configuration of hearing loss
  • Size and shape of ear
  • Manual dexterity
  • Lifestyle and personal preferences

Hearing and Technology

Hearing aids are available in various levels of technology. Most of the hearing aids sold today are digital hearing aids. Even within digital hearing aids there are differences in technology from a low end to high end digital hearing aid. Digital hearing aids allow for:

  • Faster signal processing
  • Better sound quality
  • More automatic features

There are many choices to be made when purchasing a hearing aid. We do not expect you to make these decisions alone. Audiologists are available to help you make these decisions.
